STEP 1
Sign up for a SciStarter account, or log in to your existing account, if you haven’t already done so. This will help you earn credit in your SciStarter Dashboard for your participation in this project.
STEP 2
Fully charge your phone and AirBeam instrument while you view the video on this page and review the instructions below. Note that you will opt to either collect “fixed” data from one place (indoors or outdoor) or “mobile” data from wherever you take the AirBeam. Go to the HabitatMap website, https://www.habitatmap.org/aircasting (where you will find the AirCasting app links for your device.)
STEP 3
Follow directions on the AirCasting app to log in and operate the AirBeam which will sync with your device.
STEP 4
Start recording! The “Connection Indicator” light should be blue. The AirBeam data streams will appear on the app dashboard. When recording in “mobile” settings (on a walk, for example), measurements are communicated each second and relayed to the AirCasting app via Bluetooth. Your device with the app installed must stay within 10–20 feet of the AirBeam to maintain the Bluetooth connection and receive data from the AirBeam during a mobile session.
STEP 5
Find your data and data from other participants on the AirCasting online map: aircasting.org/map
STEP 6
Before you return the kit, please complete our Citizen Science Kit Feedback Survey. Completing this survey is also an act of citizen science! Your contribution will help us improve the kits and develop new resources.
